Renewable Energy... changing tack

Environmentally the world is on red alert; for the planet to achieve low carbon energy useage the production of electricity with fossil fuels must reduce. However, renewable energy sources plus solar and wind produced electricity cannot supply sufficient to keep our houses powered (regardless of the amount needed for industry and everything else we need to power our world). Hence, the answer is to reduce wastage of electricity; particularly that wasted by poorly constructed homes.


The chart above shows how the use of coal has dramatically reduced from 16% at the turn or the century to 4% in 2018. In a lecture by Toby Cambray, founding director and lead of the building physics services at Greengauge MEP (with BEng in Acoustical Engineering and an MSc in Theory and Practise of Sustainable Design), we (Falmouth University second year Architecture students) learnt that gas is not the best choice for central heating and hot water in homes of the future as we continue to reduce the energy we produce and the use of fossil fuels that make it.


Question is how will I make my house energy efficient? The key issues are that the building is raised on stone columns open to the environment with a central core that arrives to the middle of the first floor accommodation.


A couple of rough sketches helped to see the problems, not only for energy reduction but also for structural design!


The aim of this project ARC220 is to achieve a scale model at 1:10 showing part of the buildings contruction detail.



Having now begun to understand the wider picture, and the impact it will have on how we build our homes in years to come, I must rethink some of the preconceived ideas that went into the design of my farmhouse.
