Adopting the principles for Low Carbon Buildings;

Updated: Dec 8, 2019

A lecture by Chris Warboys of Etude made an impactful introduction to the subject of low carbon buildings and how we achieve this now we know we need to make it happen

Etude are one of only four Passivhaus certififiers in the UK. A principle that was developed by Professor Wolfgang Fiest who comments in the publication 'How to build a Passivhaus' by

“I read that the construction industry had experimented with adding insulation to new buildings and that energy consumption had failed to reduce. This offended me – it was counter to the basic laws of physics… So I made it my mission to find out what (they were doing wrong) and to establish what was needed to do it right.”

Essentially, there are five core requirements for Passivhaus;

1. Renewable Energy

2. Building Fabric Efficiency

3. Building Systems Efficiency

4. Low Carbon Heating

5. Embodied Carbon Reduction

In my next blog I will take a look at each and how they affect my Watercress Farmhouse starting with Renewable Energy Use.
